SWISS PASSPORT OR IDENTITY CARD
Depending on your canton of residence, you can apply for your identity card either in person at your municipality's residents' registration office or at your canton's passport office (by phone or online, depending on your place of residence). Some cantons offer both ordering options (shared residence or passport office).

You can apply for a Swiss passport or a combination of identity card and biometric passport simultaneously online or by phone. After your application has been reviewed, you will be invited to appear in person at the passport office to have your personal details (photo, signature, and fingerprints) recorded. In some cantons, bringing your own digital photo is permitted. After your personal interview and approval of your application, you will receive your passport and/or identity card by registered mail within 10 working days (or within 30 days if delivered to an address abroad).

To apply, all you need is a computer with internet access and a reliable email address. The application process is described on the application website. You will then receive an email inviting you to an in-person interview (to collect your information for a passport and/or identity card).

SWISS PASSPORT OR IDENTITY CARD FOR CHILDREN
Children require their own Swiss passport or identity card to travel abroad. It is not possible to register a child on their parents' identity documents.

Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult to the passport office to have their details verified. The adult must provide valid proof of identity. Unmarried, divorced, or separated parents must provide proof of custody. In addition to the child's application, a family or birth certificate and a residence permit may be required.
