INTRODUCTION
The Irish passport card is a travel document that Irish citizens can use for certain travel instead of a standard passport. It is the size of a credit card. You can use the Irish passport card for travel within the European Union, the European Economic Area (including Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway), and Switzerland. You do not need a passport to enter the UK. However, airlines and shipping companies may request proof of identity at check-in. Check with your airline or shipping company to find out which forms of identification are accepted.

For travel to non-EEA countries you will need your standard Irish passport.

APPLICATIONS FOR THE Irish PASSPORT CARD
The passport service is processing online applications for all passport types again. Please expect delays in submitting applications.

Post offices do not accept passport express applications, and you cannot visit the passport office in person. If you wish to apply for a new passport, you can only use the online passport service. The Passport Express service will resume later this summer.

If you urgently need a passport for travel (due to the death or serious illness of a family member or urgent medical treatment abroad), please contact the passport service via web chat.

REGULATE
Adults and children can obtain passports. However, as a child (under 18 years of age), you can only obtain a passport as part of your standard passport package.

You will need a valid Irish passport that is not due to expire within six months. The personal details you provide when applying for a passport must match those in your passport. The passport is valid for five years or until your passport expires, whichever is shorter.

If you use your passport when traveling, you must provide your passport number when checking in online.

LOST OR STOLEN CARD
If your passport card is lost, stolen or damaged, please complete the relevant section of the online application form with this information when applying for a new passport card.

You are not applying for a new card. Please report the loss or theft of your card to the passport service.

PRICES
The adult passport costs €35. If applying outside of Ireland, an additional €5 shipping fee will apply. You can pay by debit or credit card.

The adult passport package, consisting of a 10-year passport and a 5-year passport card for persons over 18 years of age, costs €100.

The children's passport package, consisting of a 5-year passport and a passport card for persons under 18, costs €45. An additional €5 shipping fee applies.

HOW TO APPLY
You can only apply for your passport card online.

To apply you need:

Your current passport
Your photo (see detailed guidelines on dfa.ie)
A valid email address
A debit or credit card
FOLLOWING YOUR APPLICATION
When you submit your application online, you will receive an 11-digit application number. You can use this number to track the progress of your application on the ministry's website.
