Reasons why you need a Malaysian driver's license online: You're an eager 17-year-old who wants to drive independently, an expat or international student staying in Malaysia long-term, or you want to drive for e-hailing companies like Grab. Before you enroll in a driving school, this article will help you understand how to obtain a driver's license in Malaysia, the different types of licenses, and the associated fees.

THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF DRIVING LICENSES IN MALAYSIA
There are five different types of driving licenses in Malaysia:

1. Learner's license (LDL), also known as "L" sign driver
This is the very first driver's license you will receive after enrolling at a driving school. LDL holders are only allowed to drive vehicles with an "L" plate and must be accompanied by a driving instructor.

An LDL can be issued and renewed for a period of 3 to 6 months, up to a maximum of 2 years from the date of issue. After the expiration date, LDL holders must restart the entire driving school process to obtain a renewed LDL. Therefore, please ensure you complete your driving lessons before the 2-year period expires.

2. PROBATIONARY DRIVER'S LICENSE (PDL), ALSO KNOWN AS "P" SIGN DRIVER
Once you have passed all driving lessons and tests and have been certified as a qualified driver by the Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan or Malaysian Road Transport Department (JPJ), you will receive a PDL.

As a new driver, you are subject to the 10-point KEJARA penalty point system, which deducts points based on the various types of traffic violations. If you accumulate 10 points within two years as a "P" driver, your license will be suspended. As a new driver, you must display the P plate on the front and rear of your vehicle.

3. DRIVER'S LICENSE (CDL)
This is the full driver's license you receive after the two-year probationary period. As a CDL driver, you are subject to KEJARA's 15-point system, which deducts points for traffic violations and leads to the suspension or revocation of your driver's license.

CDL licenses are valid for one year and expire on your birthday. You can renew them for a maximum of five years at each renewal. The renewal fee is RM30 per year (plus tax). Additional processing fees may apply depending on where you renew your license.

To renew your CDL license, simply visit your nearest POS Malaysia or JPJ branch and bring your MyKad (or other valid identification documents) and your existing driver's license. Inform the cashier how many years you wish to renew your CDL license for and make the payment. Your new CDL license will be issued instantly.

4. Professional driving license (VDL)/commercial driving license
Although this article focuses primarily on obtaining a car driver's license, you can also obtain a specialized license for commercial purposes, including buses and trucks.

5. International Driving Permit (IDP)
This license entitles Malaysian drivers to drive abroad. It is especially useful if you are traveling abroad and want to rent a car. Only CDL holders aged 18 or over can apply for an IDP. PDL holders are not eligible.

There are five main types of driving licenses in Malaysia:

i) Learner driver’s license (LDL)

Students are only permitted to drive vehicles with the "L" license plate issued by driving schools under the supervision of a driving instructor. With a motorcycle LDL, they are permitted to ride without a passenger. The LDL can be renewed every 3 or 6 months for a maximum of 2 years. After the 2-year validity period, LDL holders may have to repeat the entire driving school procedures to obtain a new LDL.

ii) Learner driver’s license (PDL)

This is issued to novice drivers who have passed all driving school procedures and tests. Novice drivers are subject to the 10-point KEJARA penalty point system, which deducts points based on the type of traffic violation. The PDL is revoked once a PDL holder has accumulated 10 penalty points. Novice drivers must display the temporary license plate (marked with a white P on a red background) on the front and rear of their vehicle. The PDL can be converted to a full driver's license (CDL) after two years. A one-year transition period applies to the conversion before the license holder must restart driving lessons.

iii) Learner Driver License (CDL)

A full driver's license that converts from a PDL after two years. CDL holders must complete the 15-point KEJARA system before their license can be suspended or revoked. The CDL can be renewed every one, two, three, or five years.

There is a three-year grace period for renewing a driver's license before it expires. CDL holders may be required to retake all their driving lessons after their license expires.

iv) Professional driving licence (VDL) or commercial driving licence

A special driving license for drivers of commercial vehicles such as buses and trucks, issued jointly by the Road Traffic Agency (JPJ) and the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Authority (LPKP).

v) International Driving Permit (IDP)

The International Driving Permit (IDP) entitles Malaysians to drive abroad. Learn how to obtain an IDP in Malaysia.
