CHOOSING THE RIGHT TYPE OF DRIVER'S LICENSE
Depending on the size, type, and weight of your vehicle, you will need a different driving license class. Check the class of your vehicle or the class you plan to drive to determine which Maltese driving license you need. For example, there are different driving licenses for motorcycles, small cars, large cars, vans, trucks, buses, and tractors.
The Maltese online driving license can be renewed every 10 years for persons under 70 and every 5 years for persons over 70. Instructions and further information on driver's license renewal can be found here.

When choosing your driving instructor, you should consider whether you want a male or female instructor, how long the lessons last and whether the driving school offers a suitable car for you (e.g. a car with automatic transmission).

DRIVING LESSONS

Once you've found the right driving school, most instructors will pick you up from a location that's convenient for you. They'll explain everything you need to know, even if you're a beginner. They'll provide you with the training you need to pass both the written and practical driving tests and, most importantly, become a safe driver.

Apply for a learner's permit

Before registering for the practical test, you will need a learner's permit. If you are over 18 years old and meet the requirements, you can apply for this permit. This permit allows you to practice driving every day (except Sundays and public holidays). You must be accompanied by a licensed driving instructor or approved instructor. This instructor must have at least five (5) years of experience in the relevant class and must have insurance approval for the instructor and applicant during training, as well as for the examiners during the test. The same experience and insurance approval also apply to an additional private driving instructor alongside your chosen driving school.

REGISTRATION FOR THE THEORY EXAM

The theory test is a multiple-choice exam in which you answer driving-related questions on a touchscreen computer. Everything you need to know for this test can be found in the Highway Code and on the theory test CD, which are available from Transport Malta or at the Theory Test Centre in Guardamangia. REGISTRATION FOR THE PRACTICAL EXAMINATION

To register for the practical exam, you must meet the following requirements for the respective class:

You are at least 18 years old (or older depending on the class).
You have passed the theory test.
You have a learner’s permit.
You must have completed the entire training course and your driving instructor must have completed the student data sheet.

You can register for the test through Transport Malta. You will then be notified of your test date three weeks in advance. A full list of requirements can be found here. The waiting time for the practical test is typically four to six weeks, but may be longer depending on demand.

OBTAINING A DRIVING LICENSE

Congratulations on passing your theory and practical driving tests! The traffic authority will now issue you a provisional driver's license for three years, after which you will receive your full driver's license. During the three-year probationary period, penalty points will be imposed for certain traffic violations. If you accumulate 12 points, your license will be revoked, and you will have to start the process again. This is for road safety.
