HOW TO GET A SWEDISH ID CARD

As a resident of Sweden, you need a Swedish ID card. ID cards are issued by the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket). You can use the ID card as proof of identity and proof of age, for example when you collect prescription medication from the pharmacy, pay by credit card in stores, and conduct bank transactions. Since May 5, 2015, many Swedish banks including Nordea Bank require a Swedish ID Card to open a bank account. You can open an account in any bank you wish. Lund University pays salaries through Nordea Bank. Please note that if you have a child, the child needs to be at least 13 years of age to receive an ID card. Furthermore parent/guardian approval is necessary if you are less than 18 years of age.

The tax authority in Malmö issues Swedish identity cards. To apply for an identity card, you must first pay an application fee of SEK 400. Pay your fee via one of the following accounts:

Please enter your personal identification number in the OCR field (as a reference number) or in the message field when paying via online banking. When using a deposit slip or at a kiosk or similar facility that offers direct debit payments, you must provide your personal identification number when making the payment.

If you have not paid your application fee before your visit to the Malmö Tax Office, you will not be able to submit your application. Please note that your payment will take at least one business day. Therefore, please pay the fee well in advance of your visit to the Tax Office to ensure it is received before you submit your application. Print and keep the payment receipt, as you will need to present it to the Tax Office. If paying online, please include your ID number in the message/further information field.

To apply for a Swedish identity card, you must make an appointment for a personal visit at one of the tax offices (Skatteverket). Only certain offices issue identity cards.

Monday to Wednesday: 10:00 to 16:00
Thursday: 10:00–18:00
Friday: 10:00–16:00

Directions: Take the train from Lund C to Malmö C. Cross the bridge and continue on Bruksgatan. Turn left onto Östergatan and then right onto Kattsundsgatan (right next to the church). The Tax Office (Skatteverket) is on the right.

WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING
EU and non-EU citizens must bring the following to the tax office (MALMÖ):

Payment receipt for SEK 400 for a Swedish ID card (request a transfer form from Forex Bank or Hülya Leeb-Lundberg or request a payment receipt for your personal online banking account)
Valid passport (valid for at least 365 days)
EU passport issued from 1 September 2006
Residence permit (only for non-EU citizens)
Identity card number (bring the “Folkbokföringsärede Beslut” document/national registration notice you received from the tax office, which informs you of the allocation of your identity card number)
Your phone number (local, business or mobile)
Your residential address in Sweden (rental agreement)
You sign your electronic card at the tax office.
Identity cards from other countries are not valid.

Please note: Identity cards from other countries are not recognized as identification documents and cannot be used as proof of identity. This is because identity cards do not fall under a common standard established by Council Regulation (EC) No. 2252/2004 of the European Union.

HOW TO GET YOUR ID CARD AS SOON AS IT'S READY
It usually takes about two weeks from application to collection at the tax office. However, it may take longer if certain information in your application needs to be verified more closely. Once your ID card is ready, you will receive a letter from the tax office called an "Aviseringsbrev." Please bring this letter with you when you collect your ID card from the tax office.
